When it comes to UFO data gathering with the exception of a dark moonless night, a professional optical camera is the best way to document UFO sightings. Optical cameras are usually a DSLR or mirrorless. Mirrorless cameras have gained popularity and are often considered better or more suitable for certain situations compared to traditional DSLR cameras. For photographing UFOs, here are several reasons why mirrorless cameras are preferred over DSLR:


  1. Faster Autofocus: Mirrorless cameras often feature advanced autofocus systems. Since they use on-sensor phase-detection or contrast-detection autofocus, they can achieve fast and accurate focusing, especially in continuous autofocus mode. This makes them well-suited for capturing fast-moving objects, like UFOs.

  2. Adaptability and Lens Compatibility: Depending on the nature of UFO sightings, having the option to use different zoom lenses can be useful. Mirrorless cameras offer more adaptability due to shorter flange distances.

  3. In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS): In situations where capturing stable footage is challenging, such as while zoomed in or in low-light conditions, a camera with effective image stabilization can be beneficial. Some mirrorless cameras incorporate in-body image stabilization, which compensates for camera shake. This feature is beneficial when shooting in low light conditions or with longer focal length lenses.

  • Infrared Capabilities: Some UFO sightings involve objects that emit or reflect infrared light. In such cases, a camera with infrared capabilities or an IR-sensitive camera will be beneficial. Dedicated infrared cameras or cameras with modified sensors for infrared or full-spectrum can capture details that might not be visible in the visible spectrum.

With the mirrorless camera in hand, send it to a professional camera shop for a full-spectrum conversion. This conversion entails replacing the camera's internal IR-blocking filter with a clear filter, enabling it to capture the entire light spectrum, including visible light, UV light, and infrared light. This process typically costs around $300.


Remember, the camera is body only; the next consideration is the lens. Choosing the right lens can be as challenging as selecting the camera itself, and it might even cost as much as or more than the camera. Since everything comes through the lens, the goal is to find a good optical zoom lens capable of shooting in low-light conditions. It's crucial for the lens to be compatible with the chosen camera. When selecting a camera lens for UFO photography, opt for a versatile zoom lens with a wide aperture, preferably below f/2.8, to gather ample light, especially during nighttime sightings. Look for lenses with image stabilization and fast autofocus to capture quick movements without blur. High optical quality from reputable manufacturers is essential for clear, detailed images.


The final thing to get is a stabilizing system. A tripod is an obvious stabilizer if you are stationary. If you are moving, for example, in a vehicle, boat, plane, or helicopter, a gimbal stabilizer system is a must-have.


In conclusion, a professional mirrorless camera is the recommended optical choice for photographing UAP in both daylight and low-light conditions. If the cost is prohibitive, opt for a mirrorless camera that meets as many of the above criteria as possible, with a special emphasis on the ability to shoot 4K videos at the highest possible frames per second in low-light conditions. Don't worry about the full spectrum because most shops will be able to convert it for you.


P.S. Regardless of the camera, training will be needed to take full advantage of its abilities.
